S.T.A.R.T. — Safe Teen Accident Reduction Training

Next class May 17, 2008
Note: May 17 is the final class of this school year. Check back mid-August to register for the September 13th
classes.
To participate students must:
- Be a 16–19 year old Licensed Driver
- Pass a motor vehicles records check completed by TPD.
- Register and mail completed paperwork to:

Registration Paperwork Includes:
- Copy of proof of automobile insurance for student. If the student's name is the same as on the proof of insurance
carried in the car, that's fine. If the student's last name is different, please provide a copy of the declarations page
of the policy showing the student as a covered driver or a signed note from a named parent indicating the student is
covered under this policy.
- Signed waiver form — parent/guardian must sign if student is under 18, student signs if 18 or 19.

Day of Class:
Classes are held Rain or Shine!
- Dress code: shirt w/sleeves, long pants, closed-toed shoes — NO tank tops, shorts, flip-flops
- Dress appropriately for weather — track is hotter/colder/wetter than Tucson depending on season
- Arrive 15 minutes before class — late arrivals are NOT admitted
- Classes meet at the Driving Track at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center (SALETC) a.k.a. the Police
Academy, 10001 S. Wilmot Road
- Track is located 3½ miles south of I-10 on Wilmot Road. Allow 1 hour travel time from North or Northwest Tucson.

- Classes are taught by TPD officers who are department driving instructors.
- Cars are provided by TPD and Jim Click Automotive Group — all students get to ride in and drive a police car
- Class begins with a 1-hour classroom session on vehicle dynamics and how they affect driving. Then it is out to the
track with a TPD instructor for behind the wheel instruction. An instructor is in each car with 3–4 students. Each
student must perform successfully the five maneuvers listed below to receive a completion certificate at the end of the
class.
- Off-road recovery
- Evasive steering
- Skid recovery
- Controlled braking
- ABS familiarization
