For many in Tucson, Mike Feder is Mr. Baseball. With his long-term affiliation through the Tucson Toros, Sidewinders, Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority and now the Tucson Padres, it's no wonder. What many people do not know is that Mike has played, and continues to play, an integral role in the success of the Tucson Police Foundation.
Mike came back to Tucson after a stint with the New Orleans Saints franchise and an unpleasant experience thanks to Hurricane Katrina. He accepted the role as the part-time executive director for the Tucson Police Foundation, where he played a pivotal role in development of the organization. Mike helped us establish strong connections between the community and the Police Department. He worked countless hours helping to make each of our events a success. He was instrumental in the creation of Canine Walk for Cops, which brings hundreds of dog lovers out for a nice walk, vendor exhibits and demonstration by members of the TPD Service Dog Unit. The event raises thousands of dollars that have been used to purchase items like a new bite suit and other training tools to help the team stay effective.
When Mike resigned his role with TPF to become executive director for the Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority, he did not leave the Foundation behind. Mike immediately began volunteering his time as member of our Board of Directors. He helped recruit new board members through his work on the Nominating Committee, and for several years, has chaired the subcommittee for the Unsung Heroes dinner that is responsible for acquiring items for our silent auction.
Mike integrates the Tucson Police Foundation into many parts of his daily life. As one example, he has found ways to connect Tucson Padres and the Foundation – such as arranging a fund-raising event at a game, with proceeds benefiting the Hearts of Gold program. He also put together a public safety night at the ballpark that enabled us to do additional fund raising. If Mike can find a way to tie in the Tucson Police Foundation, he does!
In addition to his work with TPF, Mike volunteers his time with Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Father's Day Council, Handmaker Foundation and Caballeros Del Sol.
For his work as a volunteer within the community on behalf of the Tucson Police Foundation – as well as his important contributions to Tucson through his work and other volunteer endeavors – we are honored to present Mike Feder with the Chairman's Award as a true Tucson Unsung Hero.
